چکیده

An enormous body of evidence supports the activation of caspases may be responsible for the neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and for that reason, caspases are potential therapeutic targets for the management of this disorder. However, till date, the studies testing with prospective role of caspase inhibitors for the treatment of AD have yet to be realized. Obviously, this is due to the potential side effects due to long term use of caspase inhibitors. In addition, a further assessment is warned in relation to the therapeutic efficacy and stress of targeting caspase inhibition with the potential caspase inhibitors and its improved delivery system to the brain in the treatment of AD. *Corresponding author: Dr. Kuladip Jana, Division of Molecular Medicine, Bose Institute, Centenary Campus, P 1/12, Calcutta Improvement Trust Scheme VIIM, Kolkata-700 054, India, Tel: 091-33-25693322/091-9007042850; E-mail: nagi. The effects of chronic administration of pioglitazone on learning and memory in streptoztocin rat model of Alzheimer’s disease

Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease characterized by abnormal protein accumulation, synaptic dysfunction, and cognitive impairment. Peroxisome proliferator-activated gamma receptors (PPARγ) play a crucial role in regulating insulin sensitivity and may serve as potential therapeutic targets for AD. Pioglitazone (Piog) as a PPARγ   agonist reduce β-amyloid ...

Herbal Medicine in the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease

Treatment strategies for AD will have to include a variety of interventions directed at multiple targets. So far, the outcomes with available approved medications for AD are often unsatisfactory, and there is a place for alternative medicine, in particular herbal medicine. Herbal medicines are being used by about 80% of the world population primarily in the developing countries for primary heal...

Multitarget Drug Design, Molecular Docking and PLIF Studies of Novel Tacrine−Coumarin Hybrids for the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as a complicated and progressive neurodegenerative disorder is the most common form of dementia and memory loss. On account of the multifactorial etiology of AD, the multi-target-directed ligand (MTDL) approach is a promising method in searching new drug candidates for this disease. Here, in this paper more than 500 tacrine-coumarin hybrids have been designed and drug-l...

Caspases as therapeutic targets in Alzheimer's disease: is it time to "cut" to the chase?

Mounting evidence suggests the involvement of caspases in the disease process associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The activation of caspases may be responsible for the neurodegeneration associated with AD and several recent studies have suggested that caspases may also play a role in promoting pathogenic mechanisms underlying this disease. Thus, caspase activation and cleavage of the amyl...
